GOP targets Congress 'get filthy rich' earmark loophole after stock-trading ban passes in July

From the Newshound archive · first published 21 September 2026.

California Republican Rep. Young Kim has introduced a resolution aimed at preventing members of Congress from steering earmarks toward projects that financially benefit themselves or their families. Kim has raised concerns that legislators are channelling federal money to nonprofits, parks and roads adjacent to or otherwise advantageous to property held by them or their relatives. The effort comes on the heels of a GOP-backed stock-trading ban enacted in July, which mandated advance notice before any sales. Kim argues that far too many career politicians are enriching themselves while holding public office.
