Labour finally approves drilling at the Jackdaw North Sea gas field after months of dithering while household energy costs soar
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh told LBC that Jackdaw 'won't mean cheaper bills', framing the approval as an energy security measure. Gas from the field, located east of Aberdeen, is due to reach British households starting late this month. The Tories accused Labour of 'wasted' two years 'faffing', arguing that gas could have been warming homes this winter had ministers moved faster. Prime Minister Andy Burnham now faces 'betrayal' charges from the Labour Left and the Greens.
Labour held off on the decision until after defending Holborn and St Pancras against a Green challenge.
Rosebank, Britain's largest untapped oil field, remains in limbo, with Fahnbulleh saying it will take 'a bit longer'.
President Donald Trump had urged Burnham to drill, claiming Britain is 'sitting on top of gold'.
