Government awards £41m to restore 74 heritage sites across England including churches, synagogues and Dover Castle

Historic England is distributing £41m across 74 heritage sites in England, with churches, synagogues, town halls and castles all set to benefit from two new funding streams. The announcement, made by Heritage Minister Baroness Twycross, covers the Places of Worship Renewal Fund and the Heritage at Risk Capital Fund, and forms part of the government's broader £1.5bn Arts Everywhere Fund. Both schemes prioritise areas of greatest need where local fundraising is hardest. Birmingham Cathedral, Margate Museum and Burslem's long-shuttered Victorian market hall are among the recipients.
Grimsby's Sir Moses Montefiore Memorial Synagogue, the last purpose-built shul in Lincolnshire and South Humberside, will receive £232,500 after years of flooding left a sixth of it unusable.
Dover Castle, Brodsworth Hall in Doncaster and Osborne — Queen Victoria's Isle of Wight residence — will share a further £10m over the remainder of this parliament.
Baroness Twycross said the funding would keep 'much loved buildings that fill our hometowns with character' open to communities 'for years to come.'
