Government confirms new Bradford station to 'transform travel across the North', but it won't arrive until the 2030s

The station will replace the 1970s Bradford Interchange, whose bus station closed for a year after concrete dropped from a car park roof. It is part of the £45bn Northern Powerhouse Rail scheme, first floated more than a decade ago. The Department for Transport has promised a 'turn-up-and-go railway' with no need to check timetables. However, whether trains will run through the station or continue to reverse out remains undecided.

West Yorkshire mayor Tracy Brabin hailed an 'iron-clad commitment' to Bradford.

Reform's council leader Stephen Place says it removes 'one of the city's biggest barriers to growth'.

Bradford Council estimates that the station and Leeds tram will together deliver over £1bn in benefits.
