Erin King had just swapped photos with sisters Rania, Rachal and Aya Melhem at Marina State Beach on Saturday when the predator breached behind her. The group first thought it was a dolphin until a real pod swam past. California State Parks cameras caught a breach at around 12.20pm, matching the timestamp on their video. Shark notices are now posted at the beach.

King, born and raised locally, said: 'It happened so fast... it was just an instant.'

Chief Ranger Mike Dippel said autumn is peak season for great whites on the Central Coast.

One social media user summed it up: 'Welcome to Sharktober.'
