Green MSP Q Manivannan finishes third in St Andrews rector race after John Cleese urged students to reject them

Defence analyst Dr Arthur Bernhoff took the rectorship with 3,135 votes in the fourth round and led in every round. Brian Baumgartner, who played Kevin Malone in the US version of The Office, came second with 1,553. Manivannan was eliminated a round earlier on 1,243 votes. Turnout was just under 45 per cent, almost double the 2023 contest.

Manivannan had described rape as existing on a 'spectrum' in a podcast last year.

Cleese accused the MSP of trying to 'understate the appalling psychological effects of rape'.

Manivannan says the remarks were 'maliciously' edited and apologised for any hurt caused.
