Grosvenor Casinos owner Rank Group is to pay £5m after gambling watchdog finds money laundering failures across 51 venues

Rank Group, owner of Grosvenor Casinos, has agreed a £5m regulatory settlement with the Gambling Commission after investigators found the company failed to update its anti-money laundering policies following changes to Money Laundering Regulations in 2020. The watchdog found customers with high-risk profiles — including a Chinese student and a crypto user — were given only standard risk ratings. All £5m goes directly to the government's Consolidated Fund, and Grosvenor's 51 casinos will now face a third-party audit.
One customer won £260,000 then lost £250,000 in just 12 days, with no safer gambling checks recorded.
A separate customer lost £25,000 after returning from self-exclusion before staff intervened.
Rank's shares fell on the announcement, though the firm had already set aside the £5m provision, saying it expects no further profit impact.
