Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez called the shooting a 'terrorist crime'. The attacker fired from a car for just under 15 minutes across Trappes and La Verrière, reportedly using a Second World War STEN submachine gun. A person of African origin was killed in Trappes. Police arrested Kévin T., 39, a Frenchman with a police record who was not on France's files of radicalised individuals, in Coignières.
France's anti-terror prosecutors opened a case over homicide linked to a terrorist enterprise, with a racist motive.
Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh called it 'probably Islamophobic' after shots hit passers-by near a playground.
Nuñez was asked about reports the suspect's home was booby-trapped with gas cylinders.
