Ciara Mageean, Ireland's first individual European athletics champion since Sonia O'Sullivan, died at 6.30am on Sunday morning at the age of 34, surrounded by her family, just 11 months after winning gold in the 1500m at the 2024 European Championships in Rome. She had been diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025, having missed that year's Olympics through an Achilles injury. Her family's statement read: 'A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed.'
Mageean and partner Thomas Moran married at Belfast City Hall just three weeks before her death, celebrating at Darver Castle in Dundalk over the October bank holiday weekend.
Irish President Catherine Connolly called her 'a wonderful athlete' whose strength 'led the public to appreciate her so much', while Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he was 'deeply saddened at the untimely passing'.
Asked by doctors about her diagnosis, Mageean reportedly replied: 'This isn't good, is it?' — yet faced her illness with the same fighting spirit she had shown on the track.
