Ethiopia's Orthodox Church puts the toll above 60, with 20 houses burnt to the ground in Shirka district, Oromia. One resident, whose 75-year-old father was killed, said: 'They surrounded us from all four directions.' The killing reportedly lasted nearly six hours, ending only when the federal army arrived on Sunday evening. A local official blamed the Alliance for Survival, a new rebel coalition that includes the Oromo Liberation Army.

The church says it repeatedly warned authorities, but 'so far there has been no solution'.

Residents claim police backed the militias and that relatives were taken hostage in Chole ward.

An Ethiopian Human Rights Council report counts 458 people killed in the area over four years.
