Three toddlers were among the 13 people released — the group also included four older children and seven women — after a Haitian gang killed 47 people and seized more than 50 others in Kenscoff, a farming community outside Port-au-Prince. UNICEF partnered with community leaders to negotiate the releases but cautioned that the attack is a 'stark reminder of the scale and frequency of attacks on children across the country.' The fate of those still in captivity is uncertain; gang leader 'Izo 2' has threatened to kill them should police attempt to intervene.

Kenscoff — once regarded as a peaceful rural community — saw 47 people killed before the mass abduction took place.

Diplomats from the US, Panama and Colombia spoke out against 'Izo 2's' threat to execute the remaining hostages if police moved to retake the area.

The UN's special envoy warned the attack has sparked a 'new wave of public indignation' as Haiti teeters on collapse.
