Trump tells rally crowd Canada will 'end up being the 51st state' because 'that's the only way it works'

President Donald Trump declared at a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona that Canada will become America's 51st state, insisting "we don't need them, but they need us." He accused Canada of ripping off the US through dairy tariffs and claimed the takeover was inevitable — "just like Greenland." The remarks threaten to reignite his bitter feud with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, already strained by Trump's unilateral renaming of Lake Ontario as "Lake America."
Trump demanded to know why the US should lose $100bn a year "to support a country that isn't one of us."
Carney had already fired back over Lake Ontario, insisting it was "Lake Ontario — then, now and always."
The US ambassador to Canada separately suggested Canadian politicians' comments on tariffs could amount to "election interference" ahead of November's midterms.
