Healey is to spend £7m of taxpayer cash on Burnham's Northern Olympics dream despite Manchester's two failed bids

Chancellor John Healey will unveil the cash in Wednesday's Budget to fund a full feasibility study into a 'Northern Games' in the 2040s. Officials will examine venues, transport links, the total cost and whether any bid could actually win. Manchester lost out to Atlanta for 1996 and to Sydney for 2000. Prime Minister Andy Burnham insists the Games would be 'something everyone could get behind'.

Sadiq Khan has called a north-only bid a 'missed opportunity' that leaves out London.

After the 2000 flop, then Tory MP Damian Green said nobody would pick Manchester over Sydney.

The claimed £9.9bn economic boost from London 2012 has been disputed.
