Health Secretary vows 'no child should be treated in a corridor' as 12-hour A&E waits soar past 50,000

Yvette Cooper has ordered the head of NHS England to draw up urgent new A&E standards for children, including a plan to wipe out corridor care. An average of 3,310 patients a day were treated in corridors in September, up from 2,865 in August. Waits of four hours or more after a decision to admit hit 129,199. Ministers will now track child corridor cases separately.

Cooper admitted child health had been treated as 'a bit of a sidecar' by the NHS.

Ending corridor care for adults is only promised over the whole Parliament.

Some 761 patients a day were stuck in corridors outside A&E in September.
