Hundreds of households are in line for payments of up to £350 after heating oil suppliers cancelled agreed orders when energy prices spiked following the US-Israel war with Iran. The Competition and Markets Authority secured the redress scheme after raising concerns that the cancellations breached customer contracts. Approximately 800 customers have so far been notified, with the overall number affected put at around 1,700.

Wholesale gas and oil prices climbed 92 per cent above pre-conflict levels after the Iran conflict broke out in late February, leaving customers to source fuel again at sharply higher costs.

Those who paid more to buy replacement oil will be refunded the difference; those who went without will have their original order honoured at the price first agreed.

CMA chief Sarah Cardell said: 'Heating oil isn't a luxury — hundreds were left out of pocket after their orders were cancelled.'
