Supermodel Heidi Klum, 53, unveiled the costume at her 25th annual Halloween party at Cathédrale in New York on Saturday, arriving in a truck with helpers dressed in yellow hazmat suits. Special effects designer Mike Marino led the ProRenFX team, using 3D scans of Klum's actual hand to build the replica, which took five to six hours just to put on. Klum's legs formed two of the fingers, while only her eyes and mouth were visible through the prosthetics.
The costume featured a tattoo of husband Tom Kaulitz's name on the ring finger — he was away on tour but Klum said 'a little bit of Tom is with me.'
Klum says the idea struck her last year: 'I looked at my hand and I thought, hey, I think I could fit my body in this somehow.'
'Hands down, the hardest thing is carrying it,' Klum said — the costume's sheer weight was its biggest practical challenge.
