Hero dad who shot dead an Oregon school gunman apologises to grieving parents for 'not saving their babies'

Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter, was only passing Silver Rail Elementary in Bend because he had gone home for lunch. He hung up on 911, saying: 'I'm sorry, I have to go in. People are going to die.' Griffin John II, 16, killed teacher Megan Lambert, 25, and three boys aged five, eight and 11. Giamanco wants to 'cry with' the families and 'hold them'.

He heard children 'pleading for their lives' as he crawled towards the gunfire.

President Trump hailed him as 'a great hero that went in and did the business.'

Giamanco credits a teacher who wrestled the gunman: 'that's a real true hero.'
