Hippo Campus frontman Jake Luppen, 31, will be kept AWAKE during six-hour brain tumour surgery in November
Jake Luppen, the frontman of Hippo Campus, has announced he will undergo a craniotomy on November 6 after doctors at the Mayo Clinic found a growth on a brain lesion that was first identified seven years ago. Surgeons suspect it may be a grade two glioma, and its proximity to the basal ganglia makes a conventional biopsy too risky to perform safely. Luppen had been experiencing episodes he believed were severe anxiety — they were actually seizures.
The lesion, nine millimetres wide and situated near the basal ganglia — a deep brain region that governs movement — was first detected on an MRI after Luppen suffered migraines seven years ago.
Luppen will remain conscious throughout the six-hour procedure, allowing surgeons to track his responses and safeguard critical brain functions as they operate.
Signing off with characteristic wit, he told fans: 'No it is not in my hippocampus ❤️' — a nod to his band's name.
