Hitler's Eagle's Nest retreat in the Bavarian Alps is almost completely destroyed by fire as a suspect is detained

Police stopped a motorcyclist who approached officers as they raced up the mountain, and Bavaria's interior minister Joachim Herrmann reportedly said the suspect was injured and being treated. Police suspect arson but have not yet established whether the detained person started the fire. Police say the Kehlsteinhaus is unlikely to be salvageable.

Prosecutors in Traunstein are now leading the criminal inquiry into what caused the fire.

Nazi commanders met at the retreat in 1941 to plan the invasion of the USSR.

Its red marble fireplace was a gift to Hitler from Benito Mussolini.
