HMRC has for the first time compiled a named list of over 200 billionaires required to pay UK tax, whether or not they reside in Britain, and is pairing each with a personal 'Customer Compliance Manager' to scrutinise their affairs using AI and advanced analytics. The wealthy tax gap stood at £3.6bn in 2024/25 — six per cent of the total national shortfall — and the crackdown is expected to raise at least £500m toward a broader £10bn revenue target by 2030.

Financial Secretary James Murray confirmed the 200 billionaires join around 2,400 wealthy individuals already assigned compliance managers in the UK.

HMRC will deploy AI, automated triggers and 400 new tax specialists to spot risks earlier among anyone with income above £200,000 or assets above £2m.

Hargreaves Lansdown co-founder Peter Hargreaves has agreed to meet HMRC after being among those called in under the new regime.
