HMRC claws back nearly £500m in underpaid capital gains tax in major compliance crackdown

HMRC has recovered nearly £500m in underpaid capital gains tax, according to new figures that expose the extent of unpaid liabilities nationwide. The clawback coincides with intensified scrutiny of football, where 68 investigations into players, clubs and agents generated an additional £110m last season. New legislation will also bring image rights payments within the scope of employment income taxation from April 2027.
Football clubs alone accounted for an extra £87m from just 11 HMRC investigations last season.
