HMRC is to take money straight from tax debtors' bank accounts while older unpaid bills prove harder to collect

The National Audit Office says HMRC is increasingly stuck chasing older tax debts that are harder to collect. Updated guidance shows that people who ignore payment demands face wage deductions, funds taken directly from their bank accounts, or having their possessions seized. In Scotland, sheriff officers can give debtors just 14 days to pay. HMRC insists enforcement is used only as a last resort.

HMRC can also adjust your tax code to claw back money from your earnings.

Any tax overpayments you are owed can be used to wipe out what you owe.

Suspected fraudsters get no warning call before HMRC enforcement action begins.
