Home Office agrees to pay Hampshire police up to £800,000 after small boat landings in Portsmouth and Gosport sparked protests

Policing the arrivals and the protests that followed cost the force an extra £803,343 in just four weeks. Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones called the bill 'extraordinary' and said it was 'unfair' to leave the force paying it. Officers were assaulted at demonstrations near Portsmouth ferry terminals, and 18 people were arrested. The final payout could still be 'subject to review and negotiation'.
