A Southwark landlord was approached by Clearsprings Ready Homes, which offered £4,500 a month for a three-bedroom flat he currently rents to Southwark Council for £1,790. Taking the deal would have added £32,520 to his annual income, with bills, council tax and maintenance also covered. He rejected the offer, describing it as 'nuts'. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp called it a 'day of shame' for Labour.

Clearsprings holds a taxpayer-funded Home Office contract worth around £7billion.

The firm is reportedly targeting homes used by councils, students and domestic abuse victims.
