House Democrats demand Haley Stevens be expelled from their caucus after she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's Senate race
Abdullah Hammoud, the Democratic Mayor of Dearborn, whose city's Black pastors voiced fury after Haley Stevens appeared at church alongside Republican Mike Rogers two days before Election Day.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent 25 minutes on the phone with Rep. Haley Stevens on October 28, extracting a promise that she was "still on the team" — then Stevens appeared at a Detroit church alongside Republican Mike Rogers on Sunday and endorsed him outright, blindsiding every Democrat in Michigan. Jeffries told colleagues he will decide Stevens' punishment only after today's election results are in. Stevens, who lost the Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed by a single point, said she concluded El-Sayed was "not fit to be a US senator" after ads she described as "blaming Jews for everything."
AOC and Stevens exchanged warm texts after the call, with Stevens writing: 'Thank you so much for talking to me — it means the world.'
El-Sayed's campaign had asked Stevens to stay away from his events before she switched sides, after she refused to appear at a Black church mobilisation drive with Rep. Jim Clyburn.
Some GOP insiders believe the defection could help Rogers eke out a narrow win by persuading moderates to follow suit in what is otherwise a blue-wave year.
