Households could face record energy bills of nearly £2,200 from January after the Iran war sends gas prices soaring

EDF forecasts a 27 per cent jump that would push Ofgem's price cap from £1,723 to a record £2,192 a year. The unit price of gas is set to hit 11.13p/kWh, beating the 10.33p peak triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Wholesale gas reached €97 a megawatt-hour on Monday, a four-year high. Another rise is expected in April.

Reports that the US and Israel plan to step up attacks on Iran after the midterms reportedly sparked a price spike.

EDF is demanding extra support for the poorest and action on soaring energy debt this winter.

Seventy per cent of Britain's energy still comes from oil and gas, EDF warned.
