EDF forecasts the price cap will rise 27 per cent from £1,723 today. The unit price of gas is projected to reach 11.13p/kWh, surpassing the 10.33p record set after Russia invaded Ukraine. Typical bills could then climb to £2,389 from April. Chancellor John Healey, who delivers his Budget on Wednesday, is expected to offer targeted help to the least well-off families.

Wholesale gas hit €97 a megawatt-hour on Monday as European supplies dwindled.

Reported US and Israeli plans to escalate attacks on Iran sent prices spiking further.

The New Economics Foundation is urging Healey to find £6bn to protect every household.
