'How can French people do this?': Macron condemns 'shocking' violence in TV address as nearly 1,800 are arrested

In Limoges, rioters stormed and torched the 19th-century City Hall until its roof collapsed. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said more than 500 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters were hurt, and one protester died of cardiac arrest in Paris. Politicians on the left and right are now demanding Nuñez resign. President Emmanuel Macron, who stands down next spring, warned the rioting must not escalate.

Macron and his wife Brigitte were pictured at a Celine Dion concert on the eve of the riots.

Protest organiser Lina Bernard said the couple 'were acting like Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette'.

Macron vowed that those who looted town halls and prefectures 'will be prosecuted and punished'.
