Howden's 117-year-old Grade II listed market cross is left in ruins after a Range Rover crashes into it
Councillor David Howard says nobody yet knows who actually owns the wrecked 16ft landmark outside Howden's Shire Hall in East Yorkshire. The 4x4 struck it at 10.38am on Thursday, and one pedestrian was taken to hospital. Humberside Police say nobody suffered serious injuries. Howard insists the cross that marks the town centre must be 'restored, repaired, replaced'.
Brodie Tomlinson, who rushed to help, heard 'quite a loud bang and a scream'.
Howard said the wreckage looks 'almost an album cover from an early 1980s rock band'.
The cross is absent from certain Victorian photographs, yet Historic England calls its base medieval.
