Publisher Faber & Faber has agreed with 'Normal People' author Sally Rooney, 35, to stop supplying her books in the UK in any format after anti-terror law made passing on her royalties a potential criminal offence. Rooney publicly declared last August that she would donate proceeds from her work to Palestine Action, which the British government proscribed as a terrorist organisation in July 2025. She had already cancelled a UK trip to collect an award, fearing arrest under the Terrorism Act.
'Normal People' has sold more than one million copies in the UK alone, with two other Rooney novels each topping 500,000 sales.
Faber called being unable to pass on a writer's earnings 'an unconscionable situation' but said it remained her proud publisher for all other territories.
Rooney, based in Co Mayo, says Palestine Action is not a prohibited group in Ireland and that she is 'wholly prepared to accept the consequences' of her stance.
