HSBC's quarterly profit of $9.63bn came with a $1bn share buyback and an interim dividend of $0.1 a share, yet revenue fell more than $300m short of analyst forecasts.

HSBC shares fell 6.5% after third-quarter pre-tax profit of $9.6 billion (£7.2 billion) disappointed analyst expectations, even though earnings climbed 32% compared with the same quarter a year ago. The bank also announced a fresh share buyback programme worth up to $1 billion (£750 million).

The stronger year-on-year figure was partly inflated by the absence of a $1.4 billion legal charge taken in the prior-year period, obscuring an underlying revenue shortfall that rattled investors.

HSBC has already surpassed its $1.5 billion annual cost-cutting goal, banking $1.9 billion in savings to date — most of it achieved by reducing senior headcount.
