Jacob Waller, 23, manager of Newquay Activity Centre, filmed the extraordinary moment at Fistral Beach in Cornwall during a surfing class last Tuesday. The bluefin tuna launched almost completely airborne as it snapped up a mackerel mid-leap during what Waller described as a 'feeding frenzy'. The footage spread rapidly online, with many convinced it was computer-generated until Waller confirmed it was genuine.
Bluefin tuna have made a dramatic return to British waters after near-disappearance in the 1990s, driven back by international conservation efforts.
Waller said: 'It is real — they are in our waters, these bluefin tuna. They're here around mid-summer to late autumn.'
One X user joked: 'Makes you think the tins should be bigger somehow.'
