Armed civilians kept watch outside a crowded church in Kenscoff on Sunday as hundreds of mourners gathered to bury four of the 47 people killed in Haiti's worst gang massacre in recent memory. Mourners wept and swayed to gospel music, with cries filling the church as coffins carrying a mother, a father, their son and a 70-year-old whose body the gang had set on fire were brought inside.

Thirteen hostages — among them three toddlers under two and two teenage girls — were released after UNICEF and community leaders stepped in, but dozens more are still being held captive.

Gang leader 'Izo 2' has threatened to kill the remaining hostages should police try to retake Kenscoff, prompting condemnation from diplomats representing the US, Panama and Colombia.

Survivor Yvonne Marleus has accused police of failing to respond in time, and Haiti's National Police has launched an inquiry into potential 'complicity or negligence' within its ranks.
