Hungary detains Orbán's former central bank chief György Matolcsy over alleged fraud and hunts his son on an international warrant
György Matolcsy, Hungary's central bank governor from 2013 to 2025, whose lawyer says he will be questioned over fraud causing significant losses linked to foundations set up by the bank.Investigators seized about 92 billion forints — roughly $300m — from the bank's foundations in May, as prosecutors carried out coordinated raids at several locations.
Prosecutors allege a fraudulent securities transaction, signed just one day before György Matolcsy's term came to an end, was designed to transfer central bank foundation assets to a circle he would continue to control. They contend that he and his son Ádám intended to deploy those assets for personal investments. Alleged losses stand at 'well over' HUF 500m. Prosecutors are seeking pre-trial detention, with a ruling from a judge due on Friday.
Police are also pursuing a second suspect, György Stofa, on an international arrest warrant.
Among those detained is an executive at the company that owns a Mykonos villa connected to Ádám.
Orbán once described Matolcsy as his 'right hand' before the two men's relationship soured.
