Hunt for 11 missing continues after sharks attack survivors of a boat that capsized in a Mexican smuggling hotspot

Survivors told officials 27 people were crammed aboard when the boat went over off Baja California early on Friday. A mayday went out around 1am and a US Coast Guard helicopter reached the scene two hours later. Lt Santiago Tamburini said 'people were holding onto each other, to debris, just treading' in the water. It took the crew 90 minutes to haul 16 of them out.

All 16 rescued are Mexican nationals, now being interviewed by Customs and Border Protection.

Two survivors are in critical condition in San Diego hospitals.

If they witnessed a crime, survivors could win humanitarian parole to stay in America.
