Hurricane Trudy strengthens slightly as it bears down on Mexico's Pacific coast with life-threatening floods feared

Trudy's centre is expected to approach south-western Mexico on Saturday and pass near the coast overnight into Sunday. A hurricane warning covers the stretch from Manzanillo in Colima to Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco. Up to 8 inches of rain is forecast, with isolated totals near 15 inches in Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco. Ground already saturated by successive storms could turn that rain dangerous.

Trudy was billed as Category 3 before Hurricane Hunter data showed Category 1.

It packed 90mph winds on Friday night, about 210 miles south-west of Acapulco.

The Mexican Navy cautioned that high waves, flooding and landslides posed a threat to at-risk areas.
