Dame Judi Dench now walks up to strangers and gives them 'an almost hug' because she can no longer recognise faces. 'I can't see your face at all,' she told Emma Barnett on BBC Radio 4's Today programme. She was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration in 2012, the same condition her mother had. She spoke ahead of her memoir with director Brendan O'Hea.

In 2023 she said she could no longer see on film sets.

Asked about ageing, the Oscar winner replied: 'Rubbish. There's nothing to say for it.'

She missed this summer's bluebells: 'They said it was sensational; I couldn't see one.'
