'I couldn't protect them': Oregon school shooting teacher says she played dead after her hand was almost severed

Becky Drury, 54, says she was shot at close range while trying to shut her classroom door at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend. She has rejected reports that she acted to shield pupils, saying she was hit 'before I had any chance to act'. Gunman Griffin J John II, 16, a former pupil, killed three children and teacher Megan Lambert, 25. A parent then shot him dead.

Drury remains in hospital; her other arm also suffered serious wounds.

Before the parent opened fire, another teacher hurled her phone at the gunman.

His mother Shauntai Nickerson legally bought the shotgun, reportedly as a birthday present.
