Ikea has entered the resale market this week, launching a peer-to-peer platform in the UK that competes directly with Vinted and eBay. The service lets customers buy and sell used Ikea furniture with one another at up to 60% off. No fees apply at launch, though a buyer protection charge of around 5% is expected to be introduced. Ikea predicts that pre-owned goods will account for 16% of the UK homewares market by next year.
Early popular listings on the platform include the Kallax shelving system and Malm chest of drawers. Buyers and sellers must arrange collection or delivery between themselves.
Separately, Ikea is running a pilot buy-back scheme in Spain and Portugal under which shoppers hand over unwanted furniture in exchange for vouchers. The company plans to bring the scheme to the UK if the trial proves successful.
Access to the UK marketplace is currently free, but only members of Ikea's loyalty scheme can list or buy items through it.
