Who cares if she married her brother? Ilhan Omar wins a fifth term in Minnesota despite a federal immigration fraud probe
Ilhan Omar, the US Congresswoman facing a federal immigration fraud investigation.Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, Ilhan Omar's husband, who has also been alleged to be her brother, with their 2009 marriage said to have been a sham arranged to obtain him a green card.
Omar cruised to victory in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District with 76% of the vote against Republican John Nagel, a retired 30-year state trooper, with 94% of ballots counted. Federal agents raided her Washington DC home on 12 October, seizing her phone, laptop and passport and obtaining her DNA as part of a Justice Department criminal investigation. Her campaign reported a fundraising 'windfall' since the raid.
The probe centres on allegations that Omar's father falsified her age on citizenship applications, and that her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi — a man believed to be her brother — was a sham designed to obtain him a green card.
Omar has denied all wrongdoing, calling the investigation 'an outrageous abuse of power' and an attempt by Trump to target a political enemy.
Prosecutors say investigators have not yet finished executing their search warrant, and any charges will come only after that is complete.
