Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old from Palatine who authorities say identified as a neo-Nazi, is accused of driving to a Hindu temple in Aurora armed with a modified rifle, around 300 rounds of ammunition, body armour and tactical gear before his rifle malfunctioned and forced him home. A Taco Bell coworker tipped off police after Paporakis allegedly called them to describe the plan, allowing officers to arrest him before he could return. A Cook County judge has ordered him held without bond and authorised continued hormone injections in jail.

Paporakis faces one felony count of making a terrorist threat and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon.

Illinois leaders are calling on the FBI to classify the plot as a hate crime, with community leaders warning of a surge in anti-Hindu hate online that they say made the attack possible.
