Giana Dettloff, a freshman at North Central College in Naperville, had made the two-hour journey to Bloomington to spend Halloween with her best friend when shooting broke out in a shared backyard at 109 East Division Street at around 1:21am. She was her parents' only daughter. Officers in the area heard ten shots fired as a crowd of up to 200 people gathered at the party, which backed onto the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball field.

Police have received descriptions of the shooter or shooters as Black males, but no arrests have been made.

Dettloff had cheered for 13 years; her former squad called her 'a sweet and caring soul' with 'a massive positive influence.'

Cousin Kyla Johnson wrote: 'My baby G… was taken way too soon — you should still be here.'
