Indian police detain festival organisers and security staff after Kolkata stampede killed 19 people including a girl aged seven

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said a loudspeaker announcement by organisers about the rain may have helped spark the deadly rush during Durga Puja on Saturday night. Worshippers ran for cover near a pavilion, and some fell on the road. A special investigation team led by a West Bengal High Court judge will examine the disaster. Twenty-five people are being treated at Kolkata Medical College and Hospital.

Only six of the 19 dead have so far been formally identified.

Officials advised several of Kolkata's busiest venues to close among the 3,500 festival pavilions.

Narendra Modi called the stampede 'saddening' and offered condolences to the bereaved families.
