Chancellor John Healey is expected to back funding for Stratford International, possibly in the Budget on Wednesday 28 October. Lord Sadiq Khan wants a Business Rate Retention Zone to pay for it, though the Treasury has made no final decision. The east London station was finished in 2006 and was never used for Channel Tunnel services, not even at the 2012 Olympics. Up to one in three trains to and from France could stop there by around 2030.

The scheme still needs backing from French authorities and an operator willing to run services.

Journeys would be lengthened by five to eight minutes for each call at the station, which could accommodate 250 to 300 passengers at a time.
