Investigators probe whether BA pilots dozed off after German fighter jets intercepted their radio-silent flight from Cyprus

The captain and first officer of Flight BA899 reportedly ignored calls on both main and backup frequencies for around 30 minutes over Germany. Eurofighter Typhoons scrambled from Neuburg Airbase on Saturday 17 October to inspect the cockpit. The pilots reportedly asked the jets to stay behind the Airbus A321 so passengers would not panic. The jets flew alongside anyway and confirmed 'no terrorism'.

The crew were reportedly 'pretty embarrassed' once contact with air traffic control was restored.

Both pilots are still flying for British Airways while the airline investigates.

Passenger Jan said: 'You don't expect to see a typhoon jet just off the wing.'
