Ireland should consider funding the weight-loss drug Wegovy for public patients, but the bill could hit €4.4 billion

The National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics ruled that Wegovy is value for money for overweight patients who meet certain clinical criteria. Treatment would cost the State €2,918 a year per patient, rising to €4,370 at the higher dose. Limiting it to HSE-specified groups could cut the five-year bill to between €263 million and €3.2 billion. The HSE says a final decision will take some time.

The State's medicines bill is already set to reach a record €4 billion next year.
