Boxer Joe Cordina is cleared over a petrol station punch thrown weeks after police warned his life was under threat

District Judge Charlotte Murphy ruled that Jamie O'Brien, 33, 'shoulder barged' Cordina in a 'deliberate assault' at a Texaco garage in Pentwyn, Cardiff. She called the boxer's response 'a single, measured, controlled punch'. O'Brien had already admitted assault by beating. Cordina, 34, thanked his family and fans after the ruling at Cardiff Magistrates' Court.

Cordina said he first thought O'Brien was a fan wanting a photo: 'I make time for everybody.'

'He had his hands in his pockets, I don't know what people carry,' Cordina told the court.

The two-time IBF super-featherweight champion said a conviction could have cost him his boxing licence.
