Islington council leader is 'deeply concerned' as TfL plans to make Angel Tube station exit-only at weekends from January

Angel station's escalators — the longest on the Tube network at over 60 metres — have been deteriorating for years, with one already out of service since April 2026, leaving just two running. Islington Council leader Cllr the council leader has accused TfL of bringing the council into discussions at a "late stage," calling the exit-only plan a threat to local businesses and jobs. The restrictions begin Saturday 2 January 2027, covering weekends and bank holidays, while weekday service continues normally.
If both remaining escalators fail, Angel station would have to close entirely — they are too long to serve as fixed staircases.
TfL says historic government funding shortfalls delayed investment in new escalators, with design work on replacements set to begin this autumn.
Liverpool Street's only mainline passenger lift is also set to close from 22 November for refurbishment, cutting step-free access to the Elizabeth line until mid-February 2027.
