Israeli forces killed Izz al-Din al-Beik, head of Hamas's armed wing in northern Gaza, in a pre-dawn airstrike on an apartment block in the Nassr neighbourhood of Gaza City on Tuesday. Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz jointly confirmed the killing, saying al-Beik was involved in terrorist plots against Israeli forces and recruiting. A second person died from wounds sustained in the strike, according to health officials.
Al-Beik succeeded senior commander Ahmed al-Ghandour, leading the Qassam Brigades in northern Gaza, and Hamas described him as a leader of the October 7, 2023 attack.
Israel says it has killed at least 20 Hamas figures this month alone, including commanders and participants in the October 7 attacks, as it steps up strikes citing ceasefire violations.
Hamas accuses Israel of undermining the peace deal, denying it is rearming — while separately, remains of 41 people killed by Israeli fire nearly three years ago were buried in Nuseirat camp on Tuesday.
