Israel launches days-long West Bank operation and locks down Hebron after Palestinian gunmen killed two soldiers before Tuesday's election
Troops reportedly forced dozens of Hebron residents from their homes on Saturday and shut every road into the city, leaving Palestinians to cross on foot. The army and Shin Bet said counterterrorism raids were under way at dozens of locations and would run for several days. Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to go 'house by house' and destroy the gunmen's neighbourhood. He faces a tight race in Tuesday's vote.
Staff Sgt Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, and Sgt Yuval Shai Svilem, 20, died in a 20-minute gunfight.
Hamas praised the killings as a 'heroic operation' and urged supporters to carry out more.
Netanyahu said the gunmen's weapons haul showed Hamas was 'planning a major attack' on civilians.
